Drills are available in High Speed Steel (HSS), cobalt, powder metal, tipped carbide drills and solid carbide drills; ranging up to hardest grades of coated carbides drills with through coolant holes.
High Speed Steel Drills (HSS)
HSS drills come in many forms; the basic jobber drill or twist drill, stub drills, reduced shank or parallel shank drills, Morse taper shank drills and extra length drills. Usually taper shank drills are used in machines from 13mm upwards.
Cobalt & Powder Metal Drills
Cobalt, usually 8%, provides a harder alternative to the standard HSS jobber drill; especially preferred when drilling Stainless Steel. Powder Metal is a sintered powdered HSS, providing a harder, denser and longer lasting material in the drill properties; a must for Stainless and Bisalloy.
Carbide Drills
Carbide drills require stable cutting conditions but, in return speed and tool life easily x10 times longer and faster. Thru coolant is often used to blast swarf out of the hole to create even longer tool life. Typically, a 10mm solid carbide drill can drill well over 1 metre /min, compared to HSS of about 150mm/min.
Walter - Titex offer their famous XTRA - TEC Drill, which has indexable carbide drill heads that bolt onto their thru coolant drill body. Available in x3, x5 & x7 bodies. Outperforms most "U - Drills' with a heavier feed rate and superior toughness.
The world famous German brand "GURHING" is proudly represented by Miller's Tooling Pty Ltd as the sole SE QLD Distributor. "Guhring"can offer one of the largest drilling ranges in the world to solve virtually all drilling problems regardless of materials; eg. a 12mm drill x 1M long is avail o/nite.
Various coatings are been used on HSS drills nowadays to give longer life and faster cycle time. Miller's Tooling can usually suggest or offer several solutions to your drilling requirements, along with the correct cutting data for your application or material.
Artu Drills
"ARTU" DRILLS are stocked and sold for drilling up to 70Rc hardened steels. These unique drills look like a masonry drill but will drill through a file. They can handle the heat up to 1000'C. Great for removing broken drills and taps; the set 4 - 12mm is a must for tool rooms and maintenance shops alike.
