A steel rule or measuring tape is the most common, and the best known in marking out & engineering.
The rule or tape is used for measuring where accuracy is not an extremely critical factor. Rule or tape can be rigid or flexible, come in various lengths, and can be made of wood, metal, cloth, fibreglass...
The steel rule is used to in engineering,
NOTE; is called “RULE” - not a ruler (a Ruler this is a king or queen) 1st year apprentice learn this expression very quickly from the older tradies…..
A rule is also an instrument used in geometry, technical drawing and engineering/building to measure distances and/or to rule straight lines. Most popular is the 150mm/ 6” ONE SQUARE END & ONE ROUND END RULE Or the 300mm/ 12” ONE SQUARE END & ONE ROUND END RULE – Both rules should be in all tradesman’s toolbox. Flexible steel rules are useful for working with radius & tube jobs.
Toledo (Japan) are renowned for high quality steel rules in engineering. Toledo rules are available in kits & many types of steel rules in metric rules, imperial rules or combination metric/imperial rules, also with the centre ” 0 “ in middle of rule or to an edge of the steel rule..
• Toledo offers a range of rule sets and merchandisers
• Perfect for workshop use or in store display
• Accurate to Japanese Industrial Standard B 7516 – grade one specifications
• The only Japanese manufactured rules that are certified by both JIS (Japan Industrial Standards) and JCSS (Japan Calibration Service System)
Rule Stops are also avail to repeat known set sizes. |
A tape measure or measuring tape is
a flexible ruler. A tape measure consists of a ribbon of cloth,
plastic, fibre glass, or metal strip with linear-measurement markings.
Tape measures are common measuring tools. A tape measure’s design allows
for a measure of great length to be easily carried in pocket or toolkit
and permits one to measure around curves or corners. Today it is
ubiquitous, even appearing in miniature form as a keychain fob, or
novelty item. |

Straight Edges are commonly used for marking out, checking squareness of a job or scribing with. Straight edges are avail. from Miller’s Tooling in aluminium, steel & stainless steel - in graduated markings or plain. Also straight edges can be bevelled straight edge or plain square edge, even hardened & precision ground finish on the straight edge. Straight edges can be toleranced with a certificate to DIN 874/0 or 874/1. |
Measuring Wedges or tapered gauges , also “carrot” gauges are used for gap dimensions , mainly in welding & boiler making processes. |
The Line of Chords Scale Rule is a folding rule. The line of chords rule incorporates a scale from 0° to 120° in 1/2° increments. On the line of chords rule, 2 x centre dots are provided on each blade &, with the aid of dividers, the rule can be set at any angle, or an existing angle can be determined by the line of chords scale. The circumference scale on the line of chords indicates the circumference by measuring the diameter. The line of chords scale is sub divided in MM on 1 side & the circumference scale in MM on the other. |
Distance Measuring Wheel 6"
is ideal for measuring both interior and exterior distances and the
Zero Point Indicator near the wheel allows the user to start and finish
the measuring from any predetermined position. The three-way collapsible shaft of the measuring wheel folds down from 1000mm to a compact 420mm and can be stored in the supplied storage bag. The wheel measures from 0 – 10,000m in 10cm increments and has a comfortable rubber pistol grips with a brake trigger that can be used to 'lock' or 'hold' the wheel and the reading. Made from high quality ABS & PU, this Measuring Wheel has sealed roller bearings for smooth action and long durability |
A huge range of spring balances or pocket scales are also available from Miller’s Tooling. |
