Dividers ( also referred to as a compass – for drawing ) are used to plot
points, etch or trace a circle or to measure/compare distances from
point to point, as dividers have two sharp points. Dividers can come in
spring type dividers (fine screw adjust.) or firm joint type (bolted
together). When dividers are used to measure, the points are measured,
then compared onto a rule or micrometer anvils to determine a size. A
sensitive “feel” is required & developed by a tradesman for very
precise measurement.
INSIDE CALIPERS
Inside
calipers are very similar to dividers, however the end point of the leg
is bent outwards, so the inside calipers can be used to measure or
compare with the inside calipers a distance, slot or bore. Then the
inside calipers points are measured to a vernier calipers to get an
actual size. As with dividers and other calipers, a “feel” is developed
by the skilled tradesman to get a true accurate measurement.
OUTSIDE CALIPERS
Outside calipers are again , basically
same as dividers & inside calipers. The leg on the outside calipers
points inwards, so a diameter can be measured or compared. The usage to
measure of a outside caliper is same as inside calipers, then measured
against a vernier.
Oddleg calipers, Hermaphrodite calipers, or Oddleg jenny calipers,
as pictured, are generally used to scribe a line a set distance from
the edge of a workpiece. The bent leg of the jenny calipers is used to
run along the workpiece edge while the scriber on the other leg of the
jenny calipers makes its mark at a predetermined distance, this ensures a
line parallel to the edge.
In the diagram, the uppermost jenny
caliper has a slight shoulder in the bent leg allowing it to sit on the
edge more securely, the lower jenny caliper lacks this feature but has a
renewable scriber that can be adjusted for wear, as well as being
replaced when excessively worn.
Starrett 275 Series Toolmakers' Spring-Type Calipers and Dividers
with Round Legs and Solid Nut are the finest tools of their type.
Designed for toolmakers and all good mechanics who require finer
adjustment and better balance so a more sensitive "feel" can be
obtained. Precision made to rigid Starrett standards throughout.
Features include hardened fulcrum stud, strong and flexible bow string,
and centrally located leg adjustment to assure smooth action.
