SURFACE PLATE
Granite surface plates have virtually replaced the cast iron plates which were used before World War II because of price and maintenance costs, corrosion (rust) resistance, superior accuracy, less response to temperature changes, no humping when damaged by a severe blow, warp resistance, non-seizing surface, and non-magnetic. Because of granite's lower coefficient of thermal expansion, granite will respond less than cast iron (steel) to temperature changes, which may distort the accuracy of the surface plate.
PRECISION GRANITE SURFACE PLATES are made of black granite which is stronger and denser than light colored granite, more stable, and wears longer. The granite properties determine the stiffness of the granite and accuracies can be guaranteed with less thickness than other types of granite. This translates to less freight and handling whenever the plate is shipped or moved.
MeasuMAX Granite Surface Plate include an adjustable levelling metal stand. The granite surface plate sits on 3 adjustable jacks for easy levelling.
Each plate is calibrated in a controlled environment at 20°.
A surface gauge used to be used also for marking out. In the toolroom, the distinction between a height gauge and a surface gauge is that a height gauge has a measuring head (whether vernier, fine rack and pinion with dial, or linear encoder with digital display), whereas a surface gauge has only a scriber point. Both are typically used on a surface plate and have a heavy base with an accurately flat, smooth underside.

Cast Iron marking out plates
Granite marking out surface tables
Cast Surface plates or marking out, scraping plates
are made from high quality, close grained cast iron which has been
stress relieved against distortion and precisely finished by planing and
hand scraping. The surface plates have been scaped to ensure bearing
flatness.
Black granite surface plates are more popular today. Mainly
due to the price of black granite surface plates are on par now, with
the cast iron surface plates pricing. Ground granite was very expensive.
The lighter colours in granite surface plates ( ie; pink granite
surface plates), are not as dense as the preferred black granite surface
plates.
Flatness of surface plates is within microns ( 0.001mm). The
cast iron surface plates, marking out tables are also subject to
rusting.
